Tasty Dinners is an insert of recipes designed for Canadian Living Magazine. The insert includes 3 flavourful recipes for everyday living.
The Project
This project was completed for my Typography course. We were to design a magazine insert for Canadian Living that was to include certain recipes. We could be as creative with it as we wanted but the main objective of this assignment was to focus on typesetting. The recipes were chosen specifically for this reason.
The Design
As I researched and explored other magazine treatments, specifically for recipes in cooking magazines, I realized a lot are pretty similar in their style. I took this opportunity to be creative with my design and think outside the traditional box. When I think of recipes I think of the white, lined, and stained recipe cards my mother and grandmother have in their kitchen cabinets. Those are the recipes I grew up on, I wanted to take the reader back to that time and create something unique. I recreated the traditional recipe card and used those for the body of my text. I also chose to make the designs look like they were laid out on a counter top. I used different ingredients as added texture and to reinforce my main idea. Since Canadian living was not the main title I chose to place it subtly in the background, looking as if it is engraved into the wood.
