Balance Magazine

BALANCE Magazine is a student health magazine. It is created specifically with University and College students in mind. Balance will feature articles specific to student interests, well-being, and lifestyles. From fitness routines and eating healthy, to anxiety and stress, every student will relate in one way or another. The objective of Balance is to provide a reliable resource, where there isn't one, to busy students looking to lead a healthy and happy lifestyle while attending school.

The Project

The project was completed for an editorial class. We were to choose a topic for our magazine and come up with a name. I decided to create a magazine for students. There are so many magazines on the market that are specific towards men and women but none that cater to students or a younger generation. As a student I realized that a lot of articles in these popular magazines do not pertain to me or my needs. There are so many areas of health that are specific to students and I figured why not create something that students can turn to and relate to better than one of the generic health and fitness magazines on the market.

The Design

From the very beginning I decided that I wanted this magazine to be simple and refined. While browsing through other health and fitness magazines for inspiration I found that they involve a whole lot of clutter. That is something I wanted to be a distinguishing feature in my magazine. I wanted the layouts and ideas to be as simple and straightforward as possible without any other confusing information. To do this I started with the masthead. The cover says a lot about the tone and feel of the rest of the magazine. I chose simple san-serif fonts for easy legibility and three articles to represent what sort of information is inside. The fonts, space, and images on the cover and throughout the magazine balance each other out and come together to form a magazine that students will appreciate.
